Latinos LOVE Maya Angelou (born Marguerite Annie Johnson on April 4, 1928). Angelou was an African-American poet, writer, entertainer, producer, educator, composer (wrote music for B.B. King) and civil rights activist. She has written 36 books with the majority being best-sellers. She's won three Grammy Awards and is a Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award nominee. In 1958, she joined the Harlem Writers Guild. She considered James Baldwin her brother and worked closely with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X during the civil rights movement. In 2000, she won the National Medal of Arts. In 2011, President Barack Obama awarded her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Angelou has over 50 honorary degrees. She died on May 28, 2014 at age 86. This incredible woman and her work has touched the hearts of many. My favorite book of hers is I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, which one is yours?
